Keyhole technology for charging station installation

24.03.20 - In the scramble to minimise carbon emissions and reduce the carbon footprint of every individual, e-mobility is fast gaining traction fast. The majority of car brands now offer electric and hybrid options with take-up reaching 1 in 10 of all new car sales in the UK in 2019.
Whilst the growth is impressive there are limiting factors. One is the travel distance achieved by a ‘tank of electric’ and another is the number of charging points up and down the country. Whilst the motorway network might be well serviced, it is the A-roads and rural roads that are less so. A number of partnerships between energy and tech companies are springing up to improve the charging infrastructure. With Government incentives to support the increased number of charging stations they will no doubt be a common sight in the near future.

Forward-thinking installers are embracing trenchless installation techniques to connect charging stations to the power grid. Pipes and cables can be laid in any direction without damaging valuable road and paved surfaces and with limited disruption to everyday business.

TRACTO-TECHNIK UK offers a variety of trenchless and NODIG systems including innovative keyhole technology where the construction pit also provides the foundation for the charging station.

A GRUNDOPIT horizontal directional drilling rig recently installed a 25m run of 63mm ducting to take the power cable for an EV charging station being installed in a car park in Germany. The launch site was in the soft corner of a car park which was vacuum excavated to create the starting pit from which all ducting and cables were installed from a confined 650mm diameter excavation. The electrical pipework travelled underground to a power point in the basement of the nearby town hall and this was achieved without any trenching, backfill or reinstatement work. Importantly there was no disruption to the general public during the installation process – which took just a few hours.

With the UK Government’s vision that “no electric vehicle (EV) owner should be more than 30 miles away from their nearest charge point” and a commitment of £500 million commitment to expand the 'fast-charging network' the team at TRACTO-TECHNIK UK is looking forward to working with contractors who will embrace quick and seamless trenchless technology solutions for swift, hassle free installations.
